Caio Fonseca American , 1959
Pietrasanta Painting, 1998
Acrylic on canvas
37 x 48 inches
“Pietrasanta Painting” is inspired by the landscape and architecture of the Tuscan town of Pietrasanta, Italy, where Fonseca spends part of each year working. Recalling the influence of Classical and archaic art, his flat, decorative compositions are created through layers of selective overpainting: what appears to be the ground is, in fact, the top layer of pigment.
